Settings Tab

·

The Settings tab is the first tab of the Settings window. Open it with Edit > General Settings, or by default Alt+F9. Under the heading Workflow defaults it holds six accordions — Manual Remesh, Auto Remesh, Voxels, Memory Settings, Miscellaneous Settings and Mouse Settings — and only one is open at a time. Most of what is here is the value a sidebar control starts at, so you set it once instead of re-entering it every session.

The Settings window on the Settings tab with the Manual Remesh accordion open, showing Default target quad count, Edge scaling, Sharp and Smooth normal angle sliders, Adaptivity, Anisotropy, Pole cleanup with Max pole pair distance, then the Create UV Map Settings, Transfer Texture and Create Normal Map defaults; the closed Auto Remesh, Voxels, Memory Settings, Miscellaneous Settings and Mouse Settings bars below it, and the Save, Revert and Cancel row and Restore Defaults button at the bottom
The Settings tab with the Manual Remesh accordion open.

Manual Remesh

The values the Manual Remesh workflow's controls start at. Each matches a control of the same name in Manual Remesh Settings; the reset button beside the sidebar's quad-count presets returns to the number set here.

ControlWhat it doesRange
Default target quad countHow many quads a new remesh aims for.10 and up
Edge scalingMultiplies the target edge length. Below 1 is denser, above 1 coarser.0.10–4.00
Sharp edge angle (degrees)Edges whose dihedral angle is above this are treated as sharp features to preserve.0–180
Smooth normal angle (degrees)Normals are smoothed across edges whose dihedral angle is below this.0–180
Adaptivity (lower value is better)How much quad density follows surface curvature. 0 is uniform; higher moves quads toward curved areas, lands further below the target count and adds poles.0.000–1.000
Anisotropy0 gives square quads. Higher lets quads stretch along the flatter direction of the surface — long on tubes, limbs and ridges, square on rounded areas.0.00–2.00
Pole cleanupBefore solving, cancels pairs of opposite poles (a 3-edge vertex next to a 5-edge one) that lie close together, for fewer poles and cleaner edge flow.
Max pole pair distanceHow far apart, in faces, two opposite poles may be and still be cancelled. Available only with Pole cleanup on.1–16

Create UV Map, Transfer Texture and Create Normal Map defaults

Below a divider, the same accordion holds the starting values for the UV and bake steps. Both workflows use them.

ControlWhat it doesRange
Create UV Map Settings → PaddingSpace left between UV islands.0–16
Create UV Map Settings → ResolutionAtlas size in texels. 0 estimates it automatically from the padding and chart area.0–4096
Bruteforce packing, Keep quadsStarting state of the two packing checkboxes in Create UV Map.
Transfer Texture → Resolution, PaddingDefault bake size and edge padding for Transfer Texture.Padding 0–16
Create Normal Map → Resolution, PaddingThe same, for Create Normal Map.Padding 0–16
Max ray distance (% of model size)How far a bake ray may travel to find the original surface, one slider for each bake.0.1–20.0

The two Resolution dropdowns only list sizes your edition can bake: up to 1024 in Free, 2048 in Light, 8192 in Vertexix and 32768 in Ultra.

Auto Remesh

Starting values for the Auto Remesh workflow, plus how its Orientation Field and Position Field are drawn.

ControlWhat it doesRange
Default remesh modeTriangles (6-RoSy, 6-PoSy), Quads (2-RoSy, 4-PoSy) or Quads (4-RoSy, 4-PoSy).
Default target vertex countHow many vertices a new solve aims for.10 and up
Default crease angle (degrees)The starting crease angle.0–90
Deterministic solve by defaultStarts the Deterministic option on.
Show Orientation Field SingularitiesDraws the +1/−1 singularity dots over the model while the orientation field is shown.
Orientation Field (n-RoSy)Draws a short raw cross or star at every vertex, straight from the field — separate from the traced flow lines, for checking vertex by vertex.
Position FieldDraws a raw dot at every vertex's position-field value, separate from the extracted grid lines.
Position Field SingularitiesDraws dots at position-lattice defects, independent of the orientation-field singularities.

Orientation Field settings

ControlWhat it doesRange
Tapered endsTapers the ends of the flow lines.
Line thicknessThickness of the flow lines.0.00–1.00
Default flow line densityThe value the sidebar's Flow line density slider starts at. The scale is exponential — each step toward 1 roughly doubles the count — so a dense model reads well low and a sparse one needs it high. Applied at startup; it does not retrace a field already on screen.0.00–1.00
Line colorGolden Ratio (current) or Custom. Custom adds Vertical line color and Horizontal line color swatches.

Position Field settings

ControlWhat it doesRange
Grid Line ThicknessThickness of the position-field grid lines.0.00–1.00
Grid Line ColorTheir color.
Singularity Marker SizeThe on-surface size of the position-field singularity markers.0.00–1.00

Voxels

ControlWhat it does
Default voxel sizeThe voxel size a new voxel document starts at, shown in your measurement unit. Each document keeps its own size once it has one — see Voxel Size & Preview Detail.

Memory Settings

Ceilings on memory-hungry work: how much detail a Flatten, Create Mesh, a subdivision level and a Rebuild may use, the Layers panel's disk swap and tile-sparse storage, and the GPU memory budget. A summary at the top translates the numbers into what they allow right now. Most sessions never need to change these. Every control is described in Memory Settings.

Miscellaneous Settings

Two passes a rebuild runs over its quads after meshing. Both improve the topology and both cost time on a dense mesh — turn them off for faster blocking, on for a finished base. See Rebuild & Repaint.

ControlWhat it does
Diamond collapse on rebuildRemoves the thin quads left where the lattice staircases across a slanted surface. Each sits between two poles, and collapsing it repairs all four vertices at once. Off, those quads stay and the rebuild is a few seconds quicker.
Edge turns on rebuildRe-splits pairs of quads the other way where that leaves the neighbourhood more regular, walking poles across the mesh until opposite kinds meet and cancel. It moves no vertices, so it costs only time, not shape.
Create a log when the app startsWrites a log from the moment Vertexix starts, as the --create-log command-line option does. It takes effect at the next start; View > Create Log still turns logging on or off for the session. See Logs & Crash Reports.
Log files to keepHow many log files the logs folder keeps — 5 unless you change it. The newest stay; older ones are deleted when Vertexix starts and whenever a new log starts, so a lower number takes effect at the next start. 0 keeps them all.

Mouse Settings

Three checkboxes for how the mouse behaves mid-drag — Ignore other mouse buttons while dragging, Ignore the mouse wheel while dragging and Invert zoom — then a Preset row with Apply Preset, and a table of mouse bindings for all modes or for each mode separately. The full description is in Mouse Settings.

3D Connexion and Tablet

3D Connexion sets up a 3Dconnexion 3D mouse: whether the cap moves the model or the camera, its speed, dead zone and dominant axis, each direction's speed and direction with a live reading, and what its buttons do. Tablet holds the pen setup every session starts with. Both are described in 3D Connexion and Tablet.

Save, Revert, Cancel and Restore Defaults

Changes take effect as you make them, but are only written to disk when you save. The row at the bottom of the tab works as on the other tabs:

ControlWhat it does
SaveSaves every setting and closes the window.
RevertReturns every setting to how it was last saved, and leaves the window open.
CancelReturns every setting to how it was last saved and closes the window. Esc and the window's close button do the same.
Restore DefaultsResets every setting on all tabs, including colors, to the factory defaults. Use Save to keep the result, or Cancel to discard it.
